The Story of Lucy
The Case of Mistaken Identity
The story of Lucy starts out like this.....It was
a beautiful Spring day in Northern Minnesota.
The snow had melted and all was well with
the world. Jake was ready to kick back and
enjoy a day off when his dog started that kind
of bark that tells you that he's not letting up
until you come out and take a look. Out in his
back yard he found a very small duckling.
This was strange because he does not live near a body of water. He searched, but could not find the adult ducks, a nest, or any other little ducklings. He gathered up this little "feather-ball" and decided that his girlfriend (my niece Amber) would love to raise this little one.
Amber, of course, was thrilled to get this little duckling. They immediately decided that this little one would need a friend, so they went to the local Fleet store and bought a Rouen duckling. (We would find out later, that the Rouen ducks are "table" ducks, meaning they are raised to eat, therefore have clipped wings and cannot fly).
Amber took very good care of these two ducks. They started out in a box in the house, and as they grew (and produced more poop) were moved into a cage outside.
All the while, Amber tried to figure out what kind of baby duck they had found. After research on the Internet and upon a visit to a local lake, it was determined that the little guy/gal looked just like the goslings belonging to Canada Geese. This was the beginning a beautiful friendship.
