Lucy meets the cats - Story of Lucy the Canada Goose

One of the first questions we are asked by friends, once they know we have a duck and goose, is "How do they get along with our other animals?" We have three cats and three dogs. The short answer is they all get along fine. It hasn't been a problem.

We monitored Lucy and Lucky very closely the first few days they were with us, and during those first few days each one of the cats came to check them out. Their first instinct was to crouch down into a stalking position and slink toward them. Then it seemed they had second thoughts about the whole "I'm going to get you" thing, and that was it. There just seemed to be an understanding that we are all part of this family.

The one exception to this was our little black kitty. She slapped at Lucy, Lucy hissed and the kitty left. Lucy did remember this and hissed at her a couple of times after that and then all was forgiven. I think I should mention that this same little black kitty also thought she could "take on" the deer. We were feeding deer in our back yard one winter and this little kitty sat under the feeder and wouldn't let them eat. After the deer had enough of her attitude, they all chased her up onto our back deck, then they returned to their peaceful dinner.
