Lucky's Strange Behavior
Lucy, Lucky and I all got bogged down into a rather boring routine Mid-Winter. We had three weeks of very cold weather and I had to carry fresh water to them every day. One of those 20 below zero days I went to do my daily chores and Lucy greeted me as usual, but Lucky wasn't there. I thought this very weird. Where could she go. She is inside a closed storage garage. I called...nothing. I looked all over...nothing. By now I am getting a little panicked. Did she somehow get out of the garage the last time I was here? If so, she is frozen by now. I ran back to the house and asked my daughter, Annie to help me look for her. Annie started checking back behind storage boxes. She was looking places that I knew Lucky just couldn't get to, or so I thought. Sure enough, Annie found Lucky inside a wooden storage crate. She was just sitting in there. I assumed that Lucy was just bothering her and she just needed to get away for awhile. We moved stuff around and got Lucky out of the crate, scolded her for scaring me and made sure she got some food and water. Several days later, Lucky was gone again. I checked in the same crate, and there she was. I still didn't know how she got there or why she was there, but it really didn't matter. I got her out, then went about my business. The next day Greg went to check on Lucky and Lucy, and came back with a surprise...a light green egg. Yes, Lucky was trying to find a nesting area, because she was going to lay an egg.
This started in mid-February, and she has laid one egg every day since. She decided that it was much easier to make a nest in the straw, so that's where we find the new egg each and every day. (We are on egg number 64 as of today 4-19-07)
