The Story of Lucy
Mid-June Update
Now that it is Mid-June, I thought it was time for an update...

Lucky the Rouen Duck has continued to lay an egg every day. This has been going on since the middle of February. Something (we think maybe a crow) has been getting into her nest, breaking and eating her eggs. She has even tried moving the location of her nest, but this predator always finds it. Lucy has become more protective of Lucky and her nest. Lucy will charge and hiss at the dogs, cats, lawn mower, the irrigation man, or anything else that gets too close to Lucky's nest. She doesn't attack, she just lets us know that we need to stay away from the nest.

The two Canada Geese came and visited with us every day for two weeks, then they stopped coming. They were gone for two weeks, then they were back again. We can only assume that they laid their eggs but something got them, or we believe they would have stayed with the nest. When they returned, they would spend all day in the pond. They were always happy to get the free meals of cracked corn. About a week ago, they had a bit of a problem leaving the pond. They took off, but couldn't get the height they needed to clear the trees. The first two attempts ended with them crashing into the tree branches and falling to the ground. The third time they were successful.

Canada Geese lose their big feathers and are unable to fly for a few weeks during the time when they are hatching their eggs. This ensures that they will remain with the eggs and their goslings during the first weeks after hatching. We believe that the two visiting Geese had lost enough of their feathers that they were having trouble getting the lift they needed to clear the trees. They haven't been back since, so we are assuming that they are grounded.

The Wood Ducks are coming in every evening for their dinner. They are still very wary and don't stay out in the open very long. There are also several pairs of Mallards that spend a lot of time in the pond, but we haven't seen any ducklings... We hope to sometime soon.
